The second edit of the ‘By the River’ multimedia presentation will be shown at 10×8 Gallery in the Main Gallery from Sunday 20th July through to 3pm the following Sunday.
By The River traces out the horror of young women enslaved for a debt, their bodies sold and misused by others. Freedom and dignity have been stolen from them. But these women entrust their stories to Ian Flanders, when they have no reason to trust anyone.
His camera tells a tale which leads us through the Phnom Penh night, into seedy shacks with paper-thin walls that offer no privacy nor protection from the grunting and heaving in adjoining ‘rooms’ – echoing the drudgery and fear of the women’s lives as they’re forced to work off their ‘debts’ through sex slavery.
